Adult Swim's Leading New Show of This Year Secures a Major Renewal for an Additional Two Seasons.
Last October, Adult Swim welcomed back its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. However, later that same month, the channel introduced a completely new animated series with a markedly softer vibe. Haha, You Clowns emerged as sweet and soothing, evoking a cartoon version of a contemplative talk show. In an era often characterized by bleakness, this show's earnestness resonated deeply and propelled it a surprise hit.
A Major Commitment
On December 18th, the network revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for a further two seasons. This provides showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to expand upon the world of the Campbell family. The series centers on three respectful teenage brothers whose central trait is their deep love for their single father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four key characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the fans of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and spread the word," said Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
Executive Acclaim
Accompanying the news commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and oddly captivating." He specifically highlighted the fans who discovered the show and championed its distinctly quirky sensibility.
"All of you got behind this new show, rooted for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Comforting Counterpoint
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a comforting antidote" to other adult animated fare. There’s something surprisingly comfy about watching this endearing family go about their everyday routines.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa stated his desire to move the comedy genre beyond its prevailing sarcastic tone. He traced this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we are trapped in,” explained Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we need to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
The Path Forward
Now, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa could potentially help usher in that change he described. Or at the very least, the renewal guarantees audiences a little more time to enjoy the gentle humor of the unique Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The entire series is available for streaming on HBO Max.
