Afghan Rulers Utilized Abandoned UK Equipment to Find Local Nationals That Served Alongside Allied Forces, Investigation Hears
A whistleblower has revealed an official investigation that British authorities left behind sensitive equipment permitting the Taliban to locate local individuals who collaborated with western forces.
Information Leak Endangers Numerous in Danger
Person A, known as Person A, testified that Afghans affected by the data leak were instructed to change residences and alter their contact details to ensure their safety from the ruling authorities.
Lawmakers are currently examining the UK government's management of a massive breach of confidential data involving nearly 19,000 Afghans who had applied to move to the UK to escape militant rule.
Data Disclosure Occurred
A data file including private information, comprising identities, addresses and in some cases household data, was accidentally leaked by an official stationed at British military command in early 2022.
The leak was discovered only in August 2023, when identities of multiple applicants who had sought to relocate to Britain were posted on online platforms.
Militant Technology
Many believe there's a false assumption that the Taliban lack comparable resources that we have,” she told the committee.
“We left it all behind in Afghanistan; it's in their hands. Should they obtain mobile details, they can trace you down to within metres. This is exactly how intelligence groups accomplished.”
Under inquiry about regarding if authorities possessed sophisticated technology, Person A declared: “They possess all resources.”
Impact of the Data Breach
Preliminary research provided to the investigation indicated that at least 49 relatives and colleagues of individuals impacted by the incident had been executed.
A superinjunction about the incident was enacted in August 2023 and prevented relevant facts concerning it from media reporting until July 2025.
Safety Measures
Due to legal constraints, the source and the non-governmental organization she collaborated with informed individuals at risk they were assisting that they had “suspicions that certain devices had been intercepted”.
“We recommended that they relocate when possible and switched their phone numbers. These represented the two main details that, should militant forces acquired this information, would cause them being traced,” the source testified.
Challenged Assessments
The whistleblower contested that internal investigation carried out by a former official had been mistaken to state that the acquisition of the records by the regime was “unlikely to substantially change an individual's existing exposure”.
“The important fact is that affected people are in hiding from the Taliban; they live secretly. The primary issue involves past work history.”
The source explained disturbing treatment experienced by affected individuals, including electric shock torture, interrogation techniques, and severe beatings.
“We have had four-year-old children who have had their arms broken to try to get the family to reveal locations,” Person A stated.
