Antony Price, the influential style architect responsible for many legendary styles favored by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has died at the age of 80.

He was celebrated for his sculptured silhouettes and theatrical styles, such as the soft-colored suits that became famous from the iconic band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "Rio".

"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message across their platforms."

Price's death comes less than a month after he unveiled his most recent collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Artist Lily Allen showcased a dress evoking the iconic black velvet "dress" made famous by Princess Diana.

A Pioneering Career

Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price relocated to London during the sixties to study at the prestigious Royal College of Art.

A year after graduating, he began designing clothing for men at Stirling Copper and was responsible for the tight, button-detailed trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger sported during The Rolling Stones' Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.

He launched his own brand in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show opened with outfits on model Jerry Hall, who later wore the wedding dress Price created for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.

Partnerships with Stars

A frequent collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price created the distinctive jacket the star wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His characteristic talent to fuse menswear and womenswear along with his expert craftsmanship in designing form-fitting garments established him as a "true original," as stated by the British Fashion Council.

By the 1990s, he commenced designing ensembles for Camilla, now Queen Consort, including various looks for her US tour after assuming the title.

Following a profession lasting more than five decades, Price staged what would be his last show in London last month in collaboration with the label 16Arlington.

  • Defined Shapes: Central to his design philosophy.
  • Performative Style: Influencing music videos and stagewear.
  • Boundary-Pushing Tailoring: Creating a unique, androgynous style.
  • A Client List from Rock to Royalty: Including music legends and the future Queen Consort.

The industry laments the passing to a genuine innovator whose legacy on style and culture remains deeply ingrained.
