Cameroonian Political Opposition Figure Faces Legal Action Concerning Electoral Turmoil, Government Announces

Political Protest in Cameroon
Many in Cameroon express anger over the fact that Paul Biya has won an eighth consecutive term

Cameroon's Minister of the Interior Paul Atanga Nji has declared that political opponent Issa Tchiroma Bakary will face legal action over claims that he incited "aggressive electoral rallies".

No fewer than four demonstrators have been lost their lives during confrontations between law enforcement and opposition supporters since the electoral process on October 12, with 92-year-old President Paul Biya securing an eighth consecutive term.

The opposition leader insists that he was the true winner, a assertion dismissed by the incumbent party, the CPDM.

Aggressive responses by law enforcement on protesters have worried the international community, with the UN, African Union and EU demanding caution.

Official's Claims

On Tuesday, Nji accused Tchiroma Bakary of coordinating what he described as "unlawful" rallies leading to the deaths, and also criticised him for declaring victory in the presidential race.

He added that the opposition leader's "co-conspirators responsible for an insurrectionary plan" will also face legal action.

Election Results

Cameroon's leader, who assumed office in the early 80s and is now the world's oldest head of state, won the 12 October presidential election with over half of the ballots, compared to a significant minority for the challenger, according to Cameroon's Constitutional Council.

Challenger's Position

Tchiroma Bakary is remains silent to the official announcement to try him, but he had before stated that he refused to acknowledge a fraudulent outcome - and that he was undaunted of being detained.

On election result day, he said that armed men used lethal force on protesters assembled near his home in the city of Garoua, causing the death of at least 2 people.

Investigation Announced

Recently, the government official announced that an investigation would be initiated into unrest surrounding the declaration of the poll figures.

"During these attacks, some of the perpetrators were killed," he said, without providing a exact count of demonstrators who have been killed in the confrontations.

Nji noted that several officers of the police and military also received significant wounds.

Ongoing Circumstances

Even though the interior minister maintained the condition throughout Cameroon was now under control, demonstrators are still demonstrating in some parts of the country, especially in these two cities, where demonstrators established obstructions on Tuesday, and burnt tyres on the thoroughfares.

Analysts alert that the election-related unrest could plunge the nation into a political crisis.
