The award-winning broadcaster and filmmaker, Sir Humphrey Burton, has passed away at 94 years old.

His passing occurred at his home, in the company of his family.

Hailing from Trowbridge in 1931, he became known as a cherished figure who popularised classical music for a vast audience.

His tenure as the BBC's head of music and arts in the sixties and seventies was marked by award-winning work, including the programme The Golden Ring.

The creation of the Young Musician of the Year in 1978, his initiative, propelled the careers of musicians like Nicola Benedetti.
