French authorities to begin stopping migrant vessels in Channel following British demands
French officials have consented to start stopping small boats in the English Channel, following an extended period of insistence from the UK.
This policy shift comes after the British leader wrote to the French leader urging him to support the plan and saying there presently "have no effective preventive measure" in the maritime passage.
French security forces will be allowed to intercept the small boats at sea, but exclusively prior to they've picked up their passengers, according to official confirmation.
French authorities have rarely intervened to prevent the overcrowded boats leaving the shoreline because it is viewed as too great a danger to both officers and individuals.
"It is crucial that we deploy these methods this period... We have no effective prevention in the Channel."
Currently, a French maritime police spokesperson states officers will begin taking action at sea, with the objective of protecting human life.
Significantly, the official excluded the use of nets to stop boats, which had earlier been reported as a potential technique to disable the engines of the boats.
This determination to take action at all is a major advancement, following a short-lived shift towards a more aggressive strategy this summer, which dropped off when the previous government official left government.
That was highlighted in the summer month, in the run-up to a summit between the Prime Minister and President, when authorities were witnessed wading into the sea to damage the hulls of a boat.
Currently French authorities will again be allowed to intercept boats before they collect migrant individuals from the coastal areas of France's north coast, however it's uncertain how the vessels will be stopped.
Powerful gusts are currently delaying the commencement of interceptions and the people-smuggling gangs will be looking for ways to adapt to avoid detection, as they have frequently done in the previous instances.
The Home Office and Downing Street have been approached for response.
