Fury Erupts as Trump's Social Media Remarks on Rob Reiner Ignites Fierce Rebuke
Individuals from across the partisan divide and the entertainment industry are coming together to denounce former President Donald Trump for his comments following the shocking passing of renowned director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
A Provocative Social Media Statement
Following the discovery of the couple dead at their Brentwood residence, Trump posted on social media to describe the deceased director as "anguished and struggling". In a message, he asserted Reiner's demise was "because of the anger he caused others through his enormous, unyielding, and incurable affliction with a debilitating disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
His comments then pivoted to praising his own achievements, juxtaposing Reiner's alleged "raging obsession" and "clear paranoia" with what Trump called the "unprecedented era of America".
Law Enforcement Developments and Detention
Police have since announced the arrest of the couple's adult son, Nick, on suspicion of murder in connection with the incident. Reports indicate his bond was established at a substantial sum.
A Torrent of Condemnation from Celebrities and Politicians
The response to Trump's words was swift and scathing.
“What a vile and vile comment,” said public figure Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Television host Whoopi Goldberg, who described Reiner a close acquaintance, also criticized the remarks. She referenced prior comments from Trump regarding the killing of an activist, demanding, "Do you have no decency? Can you get any lower?"
The state of California's Governor, Gavin Newsom, simply stated, "This is a disturbed man."
Mirroring this view, Congressman Maxwell Alejandro Frost said, "He is a contemptible piece of garbage."
Senator Chris Murphy added, "Trump has just lost it. Now saying Rob and Michele Reiner caused their own demise because they opposed him. Deeply disturbing."
Rebuke from Within Party
A number of Republican lawmakers also expressed dismay.
Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene stated that the event was "a personal tragedy, not about politics or rivals". She also mentioned struggles with addiction and mental health some families face.
Another GOP congressman, Thomas Massie, labeled Trump's discourse "inappropriate and disgraceful" considering the nature of the deaths. He openly dared others in his political party to justify the statements.
Reiner's Legacy and Views on Trump
Rob Reiner was consistently a outspoken critic of Donald Trump. During a past interview, he argued Trump was "mentally unfit" for the office. He had also cautioned about the risks of authoritarian rule should Trump be reelected to power.
"There is authoritarianism on the rise around the world," Reiner noted. "If we crumble, there’s a risk that democracy collapse around the world."
Despite his pointed criticisms, Reiner had previously expressed "absolute horror" and denounced violence for political ends unequivocally after the killing of another political figure.
An Ironic Connection: The Art of the Deal
Adding a layer of past connection, Michele Reiner, formerly Michele Singer, was the photographer who shot the photograph for Donald Trump's 1987 book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had previously shared the anecdote of the photo shoot, noting Trump's demand for "special hairspray" while being photographed on a skyscraper overlooking Central Park.
