Manchester United Poised to Sign German Forward Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich
The Women's Super League club are on the verge of completing the signing for prolific Germany forward Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Major Acquisition for the WSL Side
The forward, with six months remaining on her contract, is known as a consistent goalscorer for both club and country. Having scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and found the net 54 times in 82 appearances for Germany. Her arrival is viewed as a major coup for the WSL side.
Departure from Munich was expected after she was seen fighting back tears while thanking the German club’s supporters after a victory over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
Reports in late December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its top forwards. Per multiple sources, all the paperwork for the move are now finalised.
Reliable Goalscoring to Boost the Attack
The 28-year-old’s arrival should represent a major boost to the team's forward line. She has been remarkably consistent with her finishing in the Bundesliga.
- For seven straight seasons, including the last term, she reached at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She won the top scorer award in 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Gathering Momentum at Carrington
The acquisition of Schüller’s signature comes at a time when United appear to be gathering momentum.
Recent performances include securing a place in the Champions League knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a win in the League Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the mid-season window has seen additional activity:
- The acquisition of Swedish right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The new deal for Japan playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, who has become fan favourite since joining in 2023.
Regarding the midfielder's new deal, a senior figure stated: “Miyazawa is now a critical part to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability allows her and the team to control and dictate play from central areas.”
The new defender, having arrived from a club in the NWSL, added: “You can sense how much the club have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and performing in the Champions League.”
