The pre-Ashes verbal sparring continues to heat up, with former England paceman Broad declaring that England will confront "probably the worst Australian team in over a decade" on tour this season.

Warner's Bold Prediction Answered by Doubt

Broad's assertion was in response to Warner – a long-time Ashes rival – forecasting a 4-0 victory for the home side. "Should the skipper [Pat Cummins] be absent, they could perhaps snatch a single victory," Warner said.

Australia have not lost a men’s Ashes match at home after England's series win in 2010-11. The subsequent 5-0 whitewash three years later – following seven losses in their previous nine Tests – came before 4-0 series victories in the 2017-18 and 2021-22 campaigns.

Team Doubt and Injury Concerns for the Hosts

However, the top-ranked Test side, who have lost only one of their last thirteen series, approach the forthcoming contest with uncertainty over the composition of their top order and the fitness of Cummins, who is doubtful to play in the opening match at the Perth stadium because of a back issue.

"It’s very, very difficult to triumph on Australian soil as an England side, or any side," Broad remarked during his podcast. "Australia have to be massive favourites."

"Australia are under the most pressure because they’re anticipated to prevail, they’re formidable in home conditions, but they’ve got doubts over their team and question marks over their captain’s fitness. You wouldn’t be outlandish in believing – it’s actually not an opinion, it's a reality – it’s probably the worst Australian team since the 2010 era. And it’s the best English team since 2010. So those things point towards the fact that it’s going to be a thrilling Ashes series."

Comparison to 2010-11 Series

"The Australians have remained so consistent for a prolonged duration that it was clear who would open the innings, who was going to bat, which bowlers were available, and they don’t have that. It’s very much a similar situation to 2010-11 when England went and won there. The fact of the matter is Australia generally have to be bad to lose in Australia and England have to be very good. England have a great chance of performing exceptionally and the Australians face a real possibility of underperforming."

Selection Dilemma for England

A major issue for the English camp remains their selection at No 3, with Pope and Bethell vying for the role. Cook, whose prolific scoring paved the way for the tourists’ series win over a decade past, believes it would be "unusual" for Ben Stokes’ side to abandon Pope, who has been a regular at number three for the past three seasons.

"I would bat Ollie Pope at number three," said Cook. "In my view it’s quite an easy decision. You’ve got a player who has been part of this buildup for three or four years. He’s captained the side, he has delivered remarkable performances for England and he’s a hundred-maker. He knows how to score hundreds in first-class cricket. If they drop him now, I believe that alters the entire balance of the foundation they've established over the recent years."

Although praising Bethell as "an incredibly talented player", Cook added: "It would represent a major risk [to pick him] because should it fail what is the fallback option, a player you recently discarded? They’ve invested so much in players such as Pope and [Crawley that it would be highly odd to make a switch at this stage."

Leadership Change and Broadcast Crew

Pope has been succeeded by Brook as the team's deputy skipper but, as per Cook, that will "ease the burden on" the Surrey right-hander.

"The management has acted decisively on that, considering in case of an injury to Stokes, they have a player in Brook who has taken the [captaincy of the] one-day side and it's evident that he seems to be a natural fit. That will just relieve Pope. I don’t think weaken his position. Certainly it will have hurt him because anytime you get taken off a leadership thing it isn't perfect, but I don’t think it undermines him."

Cook will be in the host nation as part of the broadcast team of the series, and will be accompanied by fellow Ashes winners Steven Finn and Graeme Swann as in-studio analysts. The network will offer a dedicated commentary stream but will use a mixed approach, with play-by-play announcers Eykyn and Rob Hatch to work off-site in the United Kingdom, while the trio deliver expert analysis from on location. Rainford-Brent is also part of the commentary team working off-site, with the live presentation to be hosted by Ives.
