Sam Fender was awarded the Mercury Prize recently in the North East

The artist has donated the entirety of his twenty-five thousand pound Mercury Prize prize money to the Music Venues Trust, which works to save the UK's independent concert spaces.

He was given the prize on 16 October as his new release his work was chosen as the best record of the past year.

He has decided to hand the money over to the MVT, in acknowledgment of the essential function grassroots venues fulfilled in his initial steps.

"I would not have achieved my current career if it wasn't for all the gigs I played around the region, and further afield, when I was beginning," said Fender. "These venues are legendary, but they are facing challenges."

Since the start of 2023, over 150 of these locations have permanently closed – approximately 16% of the entire UK sector.

Over the past year, major artists like the band Pulp, the group Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all aided the MVT in its attempts to help venues survive, by adding a modest fee to their ticket prices, which supports smaller concert halls.

Fender also participated, raising over £100k on his live tour to support numerous grassroots venues across England, Scotland, and Wales.

These funds helped locations that were facing possible closure due to challenges stemming from flooding, fire incidents and bereavements, as well as regulatory hurdles, legal disputes and neighbor objections.

Additional spaces obtained funding support in improving facilities and gear that helped artists and audiences.

"The idea that revenue from concerts in big venues supports the local stages, where it all starts for artists like me, is just common sense," Sam Fender has said.

Fender is not the first artist to give his honor funds to good deeds.

When Pulp received the award in the year 1996 for their album the album, vocalist Cocker stated that the band would give their prize money to the charity War Child.

That year, artist Ms Dynamite divided her bounty among multiple good causes, like the NSPCC and a charity for Sickle Cell.

"Additionally, I contributed a grand to Highgate Newtown, to their gymnastics program, because I did gymnastics when I was a child and they required better apparatus," she shared with outlets.

Two years ago, they contributed their prize money to the community center that developed their act, alongside other grassroots music organisations.

Additionally 1994 winners the group gave their winnings to a charity for MS after a close contact was diagnosed the disease.

"Receiving the award was quite enough," said singer the singer. "The money was the cherry on top but we could do without the extra, because we had the honor. So our victory impacted the lives of others."

Last week, the Music Venues Trust shared it had saved several local spots in south-east England, by placing them under community ownership.

One venue in Southampton and The Croft in that location were bought under the public acquisition program, which is funded by Arts Council England and supporters who acquire "stakes" in the properties.
