The teenager has featured in seven matches for the Spanish giants, featuring five appearances in the starting lineup.

Whenever a teenage makes club a historic moment in a pivotal European tie against Manchester City, it naturally attracts praise and the spotlight.

During his maiden start in the tournament - and fifth game for the club - Thiago Pitarch suitably impressed as the fifteen-time Champions League winners claimed a three-nil last-16 first-leg lead at the Bernabeu.

The young player, who also made his club debut in the qualifying round a month ago with a substitute appearance at Sporting Lisbon, then assisted Los Blancos overcome the English champions in Tuesday's return to secure a quarter-final place.

Aged 18 years old, Pitarch was the team's most youthful starter to begin two matches in the Champions League knockout stages, surpassing Brazil forward Vini Jr's record by a week and a half.

Rapid Ascent From La Fabrica

This talent is the most recent to emerge from the famed youth system and is rapidly cementing himself as one of the manager's most promising young players.

He joined Real from Leganes in the summer of 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico and Getafe's academies, and initially featuring for the under-19 side, where he rapidly created a positive impact.

He progressed to the reserve side and it was during a friendly match in which they played against the academy's first team, then managed by the former defender, where the teenager is said to have drawn the eye of the present manager, who replaced the previous coach in the new year.

Spanish media would later describe the moment as "an instant connection," noting he stood out not only for his skill on the ball, but for the vitality, character and drive he brought to the side.

'His Best Attribute Remains His Personality'

In the summer of 2025, ex-manager Alonso invited Pitarch to train with the senior squad and awarded him minutes during pre-season.

Yet, it was the change in manager that became the defining moment in his career as he came on as a second-half replacement in both ties against Benfica that set up the clash with Manchester City.

"I've dreamed of this each night before going to bed, the very first time I began playing football, each day you go to train and each day you have a game," said the player after his first appearance.

"I've just fulfilled my dream with the greatest club in the planet and in the top tournament."

Handed a starting debut in La Liga against Getafe - where he was for several seasons after arriving from Atletico in 2018 - he has retained his place for the next four as fitness issues to Bellingham and Ceballos created an opportunity.

Pitarch has seized it with performances that have defied his age and inexperience.

"He's a extremely fast footballer, and you can see his capabilities," remarked the coach. "He's extremely energetic, with great endurance, effort and movement."

The player's mindset has also stood out to his manager.

"His standout trait is his personality," added he. "He always wants the ball, and even under pressure, he remains unfazed.

"I understand people are surprised to watch him make his debut in a Champions League match, but he's playing because I had complete trust in him to perform what he usually does.

"He will keep receiving chances with the main squad. It is delightful to coach a player like him."

A Future International Decision

Born in a Madrid suburb, in the Spanish capital's community, and grew up deeply involved in Spanish football, progressing through local academies before joining Real Madrid's renowned La Fabrica system.

He holds both Spanish and Moroccan citizenship, offering him the option to play for both nations at senior international level.

According to Fifa eligibility rules, footballers may appear for multiple nations at junior level without being locked in, with the ultimate choice only final once they appear in a official senior international match.

Pitarch has played for the Spanish national team at youth level, turning out for both the under-19 and U20 teams, and took part in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where La Roja reached the last eight.

Nevertheless, he has yet to commit to any full national side, who are monitoring his progress with keen attention.

Speaking recently, Pitarch confirmed: "I haven't made my final decision so far. My situation is great with Spain, but I will reach a conclusion in the near future."

His situation echoes that of other bi-national players such as Real team-mate Brahim Diaz and Barcelona forward Yamal. Whereas 18-year-old Lamine opted for Spain, Diaz opted to play for Morocco.

Eyes on the Prize

At present, Pitarch's focus is on making his mark in the Real side and repaying Arbeloa's faith.

He played 74 minutes in the two-one victory at City, which sealed a 5-1 overall triumph and a last-eight tie with the German champions.

He was replaced by another academy player in Manuel Angel to emphasise the coach's confidence in younger players to help the club chase trophies to come.

After his notable contributions to date on the Champions League, the midfielder is tipped to be a central figure in that.

"Arbeloa treats me the same. We deal with it very naturally. I try not to think about it too much - I must earn my minutes on the field," he commented following the success at Manchester.
