Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge Technology for the First Time.

The Championships tennis court with video review system

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in implementing video review technology.

Replay systems will be launched at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors are granted the option to challenge certain rulings made by the official, echoing the practice already in use at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step comes just a season following the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which effectively ended the longstanding tradition of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Players will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can request the umpire to re-examine other decisions, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the number of challenges a player can initiate.

Practical Application

An illustrative example took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a tough call for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

This technology are not new for Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Further Updates

Another innovation at The Championships this year will be the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where spectators have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.

Finally, with precisely 100 days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
